Heart-felt thanks to the York BID Rangers- They made a very difficult and distressing situation more bearable.

On 6th March, Eboracum’s York BID Street Rangers were called to help a distressed family at a coffee shop on Parliament Street where a 9 month old baby had suffered scalding on a large part of her leg.

The Rangers stepped in quickly to help provide emergency first aid treatment, whilst keeping the family assured.  An ambulance had been called and due to it being busy there was a long waiting time.

They continued with the first aid with cold running water and reassurance. During this time, one of the Rangers made arrangements for a family member, who wasn’t familiar with York,  to drive as close as possible in order to take the baby to Hospital.

The Grandfather of the baby contacted Eboracum after the incident and said:

“I am writing to express our heart-felt thanks to Dave, Tom and Scott (Rangers), who attended Pret A  Manger in the centre of York city centre when our 9 month old granddaughter accidentally scalded her leg.

They arrived within minutes of the accident in response to a call from Pret. Dave immediately took control of the situation and helped our daughter to the kitchen area to put the leg under cold water. We had already poured cold water on the leg, but Dave advised us to run under cold water for a further 20 minutes, before wrapping leg in clingfilm and then going to A and E.

Their approach was extremely calm and professional, which put us all more at ease than we would have been without their support.

At the time my wife was on the phone to the ambulance service and when they said the response time could be up to two hours one of the rangers agreed to come with me to the car park and then got me as close as possible to Pret so we could then get to the hospital ourselves - a great help as we aren’t York residents and were visiting for the day from Durham.

Following assessment by the A and E Doctor we were advised the scalding wasn’t too severe and the early treatment by your team was the correct course of action.  Our granddaughter was discharged after about 4 hours in A and E, she will have a follow up appointment this morning at our local A and E to check the leg and redress.

Please pass on our sincere and heart-felt thanks to Dave, Tom and Scott - they made a very difficult and distressing situation more bearable. Please also let them know she is doing well and should have no lasting effects.

We will look out for them the next time we have a trip to York to thank them again personally."

A recent update from the family was received, to say that the baby has had follow up appointments , and that all of the doctors have confirmed the critically important benefit of the initial first aid provided, and that without this initial intervention they have all said she would have had a longer recovery period.

We at Eboracum® and The York BID are so pleased to hear that the baby has been discharged after a full recovery!
